What You Can Catch in Xcalak and in The Costa Maya

Xcalak and the surrounding Costa Maya region are home to a variety of game fish that make this area a true paradise for saltwater fly fishing. The region’s biodiversity, combined with its pristine conditions and protective marine parks, provides ideal habitats for a wide range of species.

Bonefish (Albula vulpes) – These silver bullets are available year-round and are among the most sought-after species for fly anglers. In Xcalak and Costa Maya, bonefish typically range between 2–4 pounds, though larger specimens are sometimes caught. They are especially active during low tides when they move across the shallow flats in search of food. Their speed and stealth make them a thrilling challenge for anglers who enjoy sight fishing.

Permit (Trachinotus falcatus) – Widely regarded as one of the most elusive and rewarding fish in saltwater fly fishing, permit are a true test of an angler’s skill and patience. Spring and early summer are peak seasons, when large schools patrol the flats near the reef edge. Costa Maya’s expansive, unpressured flats provide ideal environments to pursue these wary fish.

Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) – The tarpon fishery throughout Costa Maya, especially near Xcalak, focuses primarily on juvenile tarpon, which are often found in backcountry lagoons, mangrove channels, and hidden bays. These acrobatic fish are typically more active from May through October, offering heart-pounding topwater takes and explosive aerial fights. While this region isn’t known for massive adult tarpon, the juveniles provide incredible action, particularly for those using lighter tackle.

Other Species – While bonefish, permit, and tarpon are the main attractions, Xcalak and the Costa Maya area also offer chances to catch other exciting species on fly. These include:

• Snook – Often found near mangrove edges and shaded shoreline structures, especially in warmer months.
• Barracuda – Aggressive predators that offer visual strikes and fierce battles.
